Mission

The Film Program’s mission is to nurture the next generation of filmmakers, screenwriters, and digital storytellers, in making personal, meaningful, and award-winning work that reflects our region’s diverse perspectives, stories, and culture.

Our focus is on “voice,” story, collaboration, and hands-on experience in all facets of the filmmaking process to prepare students for careers in the industry. Our students are hard working, resourceful, inclusive, ethically-minded, collaborative, independent, and have a hunger to tell great stories, take risks, and learn from the process.

Program Overview

The Film Program at Texas State University aims to educate “the complete filmmaker.” Our students gain extensive hands-on experience and an understanding of the entire machinery that goes into the making of a film and other forms of storytelling. Our focus is both on craft and auteurship, as well as the technical hands-on experience that helps our students find employment after graduation.

One of the many unique advantages of our program is that it is situated within the Department of Theatre and Dance, in the College of Fine Arts and Communication. This gives our film students access to a wider base of knowledge around performance, writing, dramatic art, and technical production, and fosters rich collaborations with other Texas State students majoring in Theatre, Dance, as well as Music.

We encourage our students to draw upon their life experiences and diverse cultural backgrounds to inform their filmmaking and craft. With many of our students having roots in Texas, the Southwest, and Mexico, our program offers unique perspectives, reflecting and celebrating our region’s storytellers.
